The arrival of digital photography has brought with it remarkable technical advances as well as one important change that has had a direct consequence on local community photo clubs like ours. The stereotypical amateur photographer of times past has been replaced by one with vastly different needs that often appear in a constant flux. These days, almost anyone with access to a camera, and with the minimum of instruction, is able to produce a reasonable photographic image. Even the humble phone camera is more than capable of good images and it is no longer necessary for an aspiring lensman to devote hours and hours mastering the “basics” before being able to produce great photographs. This has led to many more people wanting to express themselves through photography although their needs are often very different from the enthusiast of old. Clubs that are not attuned to these changing needs are finding it difficult to survive in the face of a dwindling membership.
These days, the committee at the GEM Camera Club find it iuseful to regularly review our club’s activities in an effort to ensure ongoing relevance for all our members. Advances in hardware/software and the numerous flavours of social media have changed the way a club interacts with its members and vice-versa, making the relationship more complex than ever before. The regular reviews that we conduct are viewed as an opportunity to expand horizons and encourage more and more people to involve themselves in photography.
At the GEM Camera Club, we actively encourage new members and work hard to deliver an inclusive environment that will further your enjoyment of photography. So, whether you are a total newbie wielding the latest phone camera or an advanced enthusiast with a high-end DSLR, we would love for you to join our club — or just pop in for a visit on one of our club nights to help you decide — either way we would love to see you …..
