2nd June - 10th June 2018
Starts 09:00 on Saturday

Calling all landscape photographers, astro-photographers, drone operators as well as photographers who just want to experience photography in the outback. This event is for you. The GEM Camera Club has organised an exciting series of photographic events to be held in Mount Magnet and the surrounding area with all proceeds going to the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the local St John Ambulance Association. This eight-day event is fully supported by the Shire of Mount Magnet. See the Booking Form at the bottom of this page to book your spot.

A number of professionally run lectures will be held during the week based on, and about, the local area. Spend time listening to experts talk about their particular photographic speciality (landscape and drone photography). If you have been to any of Paul Dowe's workshops or field trips, ( you will know that he is an incredibly good lecturer as well as an extremely proficient professional photographer.

Josh Devries ( is a licensed and experienced drone pilot and photographer who will be leading the aerial photography workshops.

Over the long weekend, the feature workshops will be as follows:

  • Paul Dowe's landscape workshop (this starts at 09:15 on Saturday 2nd June).
This is a three hour workshop focusing on the area surrounding Mount Magnet.
  • Bush Survival and Safety workshop
This important workshop will be run by local emergency services people who are familiar with the area.
  • Josh Devries' Drone Photography workshop
In this workshop, Josh will cover things like basic rules and safety procedures, stills photography, and filming with your drone.
  • On-site bush photography workshop
This interactive field workshop will be a lot of fun.
  • Astro Photography workshop
This workshop will be held under the magnificent outback night sky and coordinated by Midland Camera House (

During the week, there will be a number of special interest workshops depending on interest and demand.

On the second weekend, beginning on Friday 8th June, there are a number of workshops as follows:

  • Masterclass
Paul Dowe will run a masterclass on "Light". No cameras required as you join Paul, in a magical outback location at dawn, while he explains and demonstrates the importance of light in landscape photography.
  • Boogardie Station Field Trip
An opportunity to photograph the station and its wildlife.
  • What's in my Bag: the landscape photographer's kit

Photographic field trips mentored by Paul Dowe, Russel Payne, Josh Devries and aided by other experienced photographers. Shoot landscapes under the watchful eye of Paul Dowe. Josh Devries will be supervising the drone flying, while Midland Camera House will be looking after the astro photographers.

Most of the landscape photoshoots will be undertaken to catch the best early morning or late evening light. To get the most out of these field trips you should be prepared for early morning rises - very early. But then, as a landscape photographer, you knew that...

Please note that all drone flying will be overseen by a licensed drone pilot in areas authorised by the Shire of Mount Magnet; however, don't let that put you off, we have found some rugged and spectacular country for you to fly over and photograph.

Guided Street Walks

Paul Dowe will be leading an early morning (of course) street walk which will enable you to capture images of the historic buildings around town.

Image Critique

During the week, you will get the opportunity to have your images critiqued along with a group discussion and Question and Answer time.

Editing Hub

There will be an area (room) for participants to set up their computers for editing. Depending on demand, there will be experienced photographers around to help with post-processing.

Social Camera Talk

There will be a number of opportunities between events where participants can get together to socialise and talk shop. These will mostly be unscheduled, unorganised and a great deal of fun.

IMPORTANT We will be running a Bush Survival and Safety Workshop at the beginning of the initial weekend. Depending on which events interest you, you will likely be moving through and photographing or flying drones in some fairly rugged outback locations. While we will be looking after you, we highly recommend that you take advantage and attend this workshop.

Participants attending this event are responsible for their own travel plans and organising accommodation. To help, we have included some suggestions as to where you might like to stay. We do advise booking early.
